Samhain: The Veil Between
On the turning night, when harvest thins and the year exhales, the house remembers. Candles breathe. Doors rest half open. This is Samhain: a quiet threshold for honoring the ones who walked before us and for setting down what we cannot carry into winter.
🕯️ Step One: Prepare the Threshold
Sweep the table. Place a simple cloth. Set a small bowl of water and a pinch of salt. Light a candle and speak a welcome: “You are remembered here.”
🍎 Step Two: Set a Place for the Beloved Dead
Offer a slice of bread, an apple, or something they loved. Pour a little coffee or tea. Say their names. Pause long enough to feel the room lean closer.
🌫️ Step Three: Name What Must Be Released
On a scrap of paper, write what you choose to lay down: habits, fears, old stories. Fold it once. Hold it to the candle’s heat until it darkens at the edge. Drop the paper into a fire-safe dish and let it fade.
🌙 Step Four: Listen and Answer
Close your eyes. Let any memory rise and pass. If words come, note them softly. Promise one small act of kindness for the living in their honor.
✨ Samhain reminds us that endings are keepers of light. We cross the threshold by carrying only what is true.
When the flame grows low, thank the visitors and gently close the door: “Go in peace. You are loved.”
